Most payroll software is sold to companies that have an HR department. SurePayroll is sold to the person who is the HR department — usually the owner, usually at nine o'clock at night. It has been doing that since 2000, it is owned by Paychex, and it has quietly become one of the cheapest credible ways for a very small US employer to get off spreadsheets and onto real, filed, guaranteed payroll.
What is SurePayroll?
SurePayroll is an online payroll service for US small businesses and household employers. It runs payroll, calculates deductions, pays your people by direct deposit, and — on the full-service plans — calculates, files and pays your federal, state and local payroll taxes, then issues W-2s and 1099s at year end. It sells in two distinct directions: conventional small-business payroll, and a separate household product for people who employ a nanny, carer or housekeeper. That second one matters more than it sounds, because almost nobody else does it properly.
Key features
- Auto Payroll — salaried runs process on schedule without you logging in
- Full-service tax filing at federal, state and local level, backed by a penalty guarantee
- A cheaper self-service tier that prepares the forms and leaves the filing to you
- Dedicated nanny and household payroll, including Schedule H at year end
- Unlimited payroll runs and support for both W-2 employees and 1099 contractors
- Mobile apps that can run a full payroll, not just view one
- US-based phone support six days a week
- 401(k), workers' comp, health benefits and time tracking as add-ons through Paychex partners
- Integrations with QuickBooks, Xero and common accounting tools
Pricing
SurePayroll uses the standard model — a monthly base fee plus a per-person charge — split across a self-service tier, a full-service tier, and a flat household plan. The self-service option is the cheapest genuine route onto payroll software we've found from an established provider: you get the calculations and the prepared forms, and you submit the filings yourself. The full-service tier adds the automatic filing and the guarantee, and is still typically below what Gusto or QuickBooks charge for a handful of employees. Add-ons like 401(k) and workers' comp are priced separately, and benefits are underwritten by partners rather than SurePayroll. Rates change and promotions come and go, so confirm the current numbers before you commit — but the positioning is consistent: cheaper than the household names at low headcount.
Pros and cons
The pros are focus, price and support. It does the small handful of things a micro-employer needs and does them reliably; the tax filing guarantee is a real commitment rather than marketing; the household payroll product genuinely has no mainstream equivalent; and the US phone line, open six days a week, is the thing customers bring up unprompted. The cons are just as clear. The interface looks and feels older than Gusto or Rippling, and there's no hiding it. Reporting is basic, and if you want analytics you'll be exporting to a spreadsheet. HR functionality barely exists — there's no meaningful onboarding, document or performance tooling, and benefits are a partner referral rather than an integrated experience. It's US-only. And it scales poorly: past twenty-five or so employees, or across multiple states and entities, you'll outgrow it and the per-person maths stops flattering it.
The verdict
SurePayroll is the right answer to a narrower question than most payroll tools try to answer, and it answers it better than anyone. If you have a small US team, you want payroll to run itself, you want the taxes filed and guaranteed, and you'd rather not pay for HR software you'll never open, this is the strongest value on the market — and if you employ someone at home, it's close to the only sensible option. Choose Gusto instead if benefits, onboarding and a modern interface are worth the extra per head, or Rippling if you're building something that needs real HRIS and IT depth. For the businesses SurePayroll is actually aimed at, though, it's excellent, and 8.9/10 reflects how well it fits that brief — not a claim that it's the most sophisticated platform here.
